Motion to Impeach Gachagua

Today, a motion to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was presented before the National Assembly. The motion, tabled by Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi, accuses Gachagua of gross misconduct and violation of the Constitution.

Allegations against Gachagua

The motion alleges that Gachagua engaged in corrupt practices, including the irregular allocation of public funds and abuse of office. It also accuses him of undermining the authority of the President and inciting violence.

Corrupt Practices

The motion specifically cites allegations that Gachagua received kickbacks from government contracts and used his position to benefit his family and associates. It also accuses him of misappropriating public funds for personal use.

Abuse of Office

The motion alleges that Gachagua has used his position as Deputy President to intimidate and silence political opponents. It also accuses him of interfering with the work of independent institutions, such as the judiciary and the media.

Undermining the President's Authority

The motion alleges that Gachagua has publicly contradicted the President on several occasions and has made statements that have undermined his authority. It also accuses him of engaging in divisive rhetoric that has created tensions within the government.

Inciting Violence

The motion alleges that Gachagua has made statements that have incited violence and ethnic hatred. It cites his recent remarks about the 2007-2008 post-election violence as evidence of his lack of remorse and commitment to peace.

Next Steps

The motion will now be debated in the National Assembly. If it is passed, it will be sent to the Senate for further consideration. A two-thirds majority vote in both the National Assembly and the Senate is required to impeach the Deputy President.
